Casa del Herrero: The Romance of Spanish Colonial by Robert Sweeney; introduction by Marc Appleton ; photography by Matt Walla
What makes a house a home, and what makes a home historical is artfully displayed in the new book by architectural historian Sweeney (also president of Friends of the Schindler House). In interesting detail, he delves into the history and passions of the Steedman family, which would see three generations enjoy the continually evolving Montecito landmark. A great amount of archival material - construction and family photos, plans, tile patterns, correspondence - complement Walla's warm images. How the life of the people and the life of the house merge is seen in examples of Steedman's silversmith work (SAH/SCC tour-goers will remember the incredible workshop on site, which is celebrated with a gate-fold photo). Its designation as a National Historic Landmark earlier this year is just one way Casa del Herrero will live on. This book is the other.
