Climate Change: Mid-Century Modern in La Jolla
Exhibit
Saturday, August 23,2014, 01:00 PM

Make a day of it—or a weekend! SAH/SCC and the La Jolla Historical Society are hosting a three-part event at the historical Wisteria Cottage in beautiful La Jolla.

The day begins at 1:00PM with pastries and lemonade on the lawn, as we gather for a tour of the current exhibit in historic Wisteria Cottage,Climate Change: Midcentury Modern La Jolla”. The exhibit tour will be led by the La Jolla Historical Society’s executive director, Heath Fox. The exhibition, including architecture, furniture, painting & sculpture, highlights the remarkable flowering of modernism in the 1950s-60s in La Jolla.

In addition to the exhibit tour, guests will be treated to a discussion on the research and challenges of converting the historic (1904; remodeled in 1909 by Irving Gill) Wisteria Cottage, by architectural historian and life member, Diane Kane. The new exhibition space was completed in May of 2014.

Guests will finish the afternoon with a walking tour of the Irving Gill Historic District in the four-block area surrounding Wisteria Cottage led by members of the La Jolla Historical Society, followed by fruit and coffee.

Considering the distance from Los Angeles, you might want to stay overnight so you can visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, in Gill’s 1916 Scripp’s House (sensitively remodeled and enlarged in 1996 by Robert Venturi), and a current exhibit from the Tamayo Museum in Mexico City, take a self-driving tour of Mid-Century Modernism guided by a brochure with maps, or enjoy a tourist’s weekend in La Jolla.

Space is limited for this event. Tickets are $15 for members and $25 for non-members. Once you register, you will receive driving directions, parking locations, a list of nearby cafés for those who arrive in time for lunch (recommended), and a list of convenient lodgings for those who wish to stay overnight.
