About the Organization:

The Society of Architectural Historians, Southern California Chapter

(SAH/SCC) is a non-profit organization of volunteer enthusiasts. Although our parent organization, the Society of Architectural Historians, includes academics, architects, and other kinds of architecture professionals as well as others interested in architecture and its study and protection, SAH/SCC draws its members primarily from the community at large. Everyone is welcome to become a member, and our events are commonly open to the public. We are dedicated to promoting the appreciation and understanding of Southern California’s rich architectural history. Our mission is education and outreach. Although we naturally favor the preservation of outstanding examples of historical architecture, we are not an advocacy organization for specific preservation causes. We offer a robust schedule of on-site tours, lectures, discussions, and other events in support of our mission. We depend on the support of members to continue to realize our mission, so please consider joining or purchasing gift memberships. Thank you!

Treasurer: John Berley

"Architecture is primarily experiential," says long- time board member

John Berley. "You have to experience architecture to truly understand it. No photograph can fully convey the sensations of light, scale, material and volume that one perceives when moving though a building. This, combined with insights into the ideas, technologies, and processes of making architecture is what the SAH/SCC is all about." John studied architecture at Cal Poly Pomona, and works at Frederick Fisher and Partners.

A freelance strategic planner for the past 10 years, Sian Winship has

provided marketing research and branding assistance to some of the largest and most progressive companies in America. A fourth-generation native Californian, Sian is "on the SAH/SCC board because I enjoy creating opportunities for modern architecture enthusiasts to experience and discuss Southern California's unique modernist legacy." She curated several successful SAH/SCC events, including Exiles + Emigres, Architecture of Ojai, and Historic and Modern Ventura, and the January 2001 travel tour, The Sarasota Modern Movement and the Case Study House Program.

Says Craig: "Until July, my own family - wife, Debi, and two sons Rhett and Dylan - lived in the 4,400-square-foot hilltop home built by my father for his own family in 1957. This house is listed in Gebhard and Winters Contemporary Architecture of Southern California, and was featured as a SAH/SCC Modern Patrons tour a year ago.

"My wife and I were very impressed with the professionalism of the SAH/SCC tour of our home, and started attending other SAH/SCC events. This rekindled an interest in architecture, which had begun in my early childhood. My personal goal is to build a small Rodney Walker-inspired home on property somewhere in Southern California."
